Africa's Largest National Park
Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) is Africa's largest national park, covering over 50,000 km² of pristine wilderness along the Rufiji River. Formerly known as the Selous — one of Africa's greatest game reserves named after the legendary hunter Frederick Selous — it was renamed Nyerere in 2022 to honour Tanzania's founding father Julius Nyerere. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to some of Africa's largest concentrations of elephant, hippo, crocodile, lion and wild dog. Unlike the Northern Circuit, Nyerere offers a truly off-the-beaten-path safari experience.
