Tanzania Can Be Visited All Year Round

Tanzania has a huge advantage for travellers — the country can be visited throughout the year. Each season offers a different and equally rewarding experience.

Interior Highlands

The interior, with the highlands (above 1,500 m), enjoys a moderate tropical climate. Temperatures are pleasantly warm during the day and can become cool at night, especially at altitude.

The higher you go, the cooler it gets. Altitude brings relief from the heat and more pleasant trekking conditions.

Coast & Indian Ocean

The coast and flatlands experience a flat, humid equatorial climate. The closer you get to the Indian Ocean, the hotter and more humid the conditions become — sometimes very hot.

The lower the altitude, the hotter it gets. Pack light, breathable clothing for coastal areas and Zanzibar.
The Seasons

When to Visit Tanzania

High Season

The Dry Season

Main dry season
May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct
Warmest months
Dec Jan Feb

☀️ Sun, blue sky, dry landscapes, and thirsty animals congregating around water sources. This is the best time to see wildlife as animals are easier to spot in the sparse dry-season bush.

Best for wildlife viewing — animals gather at watering holes and vegetation is low, making sightings easier.
Low Season

The Rainy Seasons

🌱 Long Rains (Masika)
Mid-Mar April Early May

Most rainfall concentrated in April. Evenings can be cool or cold. On the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, temperatures may drop below 10°C at night.

🌥 Short Rains (Vuli)
Nov Mid-Dec

Rain falls only at certain times of day — not all day. The landscape transforms dramatically. Photographers love the wet season for the exceptional brightness: savannah re-gilded by light after a storm, under charcoal-grey skies.

Budget advantage: Travel prices and on-site services are significantly lower during the low season.

Regions & Their Climatic Peculiarities

Great Northern Parks

Serengeti, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara sit at an average altitude of 1,500 m, giving them a warm but moderate altitude climate. Significant heat, but never stuffy or oppressive.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Africa’s highest peak reaches 5,895 m and experiences extreme weather variations between its base and summit. Conditions change dramatically as you ascend.

January & February: Snowfall at night near and above the summit zone.
July & August: Freezing nights at high altitude. Proper cold-weather gear is essential.

Dar es Salaam & the East Coast

Equatorial climate with high humidity throughout the year. Hot and sultry conditions are constant — the coast is best experienced during the cooler Indian Ocean breeze months.

Rain typically falls in November – December and early March to early May on the coast.
🏝️

Zanzibar, Pemba & Mafia Islands

The islands share an equatorial climate identical to Dar es Salaam and the coast — same temperatures and similar rainfall patterns throughout the year.

It is very hot and the air is saturated with moisture — except when the Indian Ocean winds blow, which brings refreshing relief.

Indian Ocean Winds

From June to September, winds blowing in from the Indian Ocean cool the islands and reduce humidity — making this the most pleasant period to visit Zanzibar.
