Tanzania Can Be Visited All Year Round
Tanzania has a huge advantage for travellers — the country can be visited throughout the year. Each season offers a different and equally rewarding experience.
Interior Highlands
The interior, with the highlands (above 1,500 m), enjoys a moderate tropical climate. Temperatures are pleasantly warm during the day and can become cool at night, especially at altitude.
Coast & Indian Ocean
The coast and flatlands experience a flat, humid equatorial climate. The closer you get to the Indian Ocean, the hotter and more humid the conditions become — sometimes very hot.
When to Visit Tanzania
The Dry Season
☀️ Sun, blue sky, dry landscapes, and thirsty animals congregating around water sources. This is the best time to see wildlife as animals are easier to spot in the sparse dry-season bush.
The Rainy Seasons
Most rainfall concentrated in April. Evenings can be cool or cold. On the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, temperatures may drop below 10°C at night.
Rain falls only at certain times of day — not all day. The landscape transforms dramatically. Photographers love the wet season for the exceptional brightness: savannah re-gilded by light after a storm, under charcoal-grey skies.
Regions & Their Climatic Peculiarities
Great Northern Parks
Serengeti, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara sit at an average altitude of 1,500 m, giving them a warm but moderate altitude climate. Significant heat, but never stuffy or oppressive.
Jan, Feb & Mar are the warmest months of the year in this region.
Mount Kilimanjaro
Africa’s highest peak reaches 5,895 m and experiences extreme weather variations between its base and summit. Conditions change dramatically as you ascend.
Dar es Salaam & the East Coast
Equatorial climate with high humidity throughout the year. Hot and sultry conditions are constant — the coast is best experienced during the cooler Indian Ocean breeze months.
Zanzibar, Pemba & Mafia Islands
The islands share an equatorial climate identical to Dar es Salaam and the coast — same temperatures and similar rainfall patterns throughout the year.
It is very hot and the air is saturated with moisture — except when the Indian Ocean winds blow, which brings refreshing relief.
From June to September, winds blowing in from the Indian Ocean cool the islands and reduce humidity — making this the most pleasant period to visit Zanzibar.
