About This Safari

Mount Meru Trek

Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest peak at 4,566m and, for many experienced trekkers, the most dramatic mountain climb in East Africa. Rising from the floor of Arusha National Park, Meru’s volcanic cone features a spectacular horseshoe-shaped crater, dramatic ash cone and a narrow summit ridge with vertiginous drops on both sides.

The four-day ascent takes you through a remarkable sequence of vegetation zones — montane forest alive with colobus monkeys, buffalo and giraffe; open heath and moorland; and finally the stark volcanic landscape of the upper crater. The final ridge walk to Socialist Peak is one of East Africa’s most dramatic summit experiences, with views of Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped dome on clear mornings.

Mount Meru is an outstanding warm-up for Kilimanjaro — the altitude acclimatisation gained on Meru significantly improves summit success rates on Kilimanjaro. Many experienced trekkers also consider Meru the more interesting and dramatic of the two mountains. Contact us to combine Meru and Kilimanjaro into a back-to-back expedition.

✨ What We Love About This Safari
Wildlife on the Climb: Unlike Kilimanjaro, Meru’s lower slopes are in Arusha National Park — you will share the trail with giraffe, buffalo and colobus monkeys.
The Crater View: Meru’s horseshoe crater is one of Tanzania’s most dramatic geological features — standing on the rim looking across to the active ash cone is extraordinary.
Kilimanjaro Acclimatisation: The altitude gain on Meru is the best preparation available for Kilimanjaro — combining both mountains dramatically improves your summit chances.
