Eight days in western Tanzania — one of Africa's genuine final frontiers combining two of the continent's most extraordinary and remote destinations. Begin at Mahale Mountains National Park on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, with two full days of chimpanzee trekking in ancient forest, snorkelling and kayaking on the world's longest freshwater lake, and a visit to the local fishing village. Arrive Kilimanjaro / Dar es Salaam

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Julius Nyerere International Airport, Dar es Salaam. Transfer to the hotel in town for dinner and overnight at Mountain Village Serena (Arusha) or Dar es Salaam Serena Hotel.

Transfer to Arusha Airport or Julius Nyerere International Airport for the light aircraft flight to Mahale Mountains National Park — one of Africa's most remote and spectacular destinations, accessible only by air and boat with no roads in or out. On arrival transfer by boat to Kungwe Beach Lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, visit the local fishermen's village on the shores of Lake Tanganyika — an insight into the traditional life of the Tongwe people who have coexisted with the Mahale forest for generations. Dinner and overnight at Kungwe Beach Lodge.

Mahale Mountains — Full Day Chimpanzee Trekking

Full day of chimpanzee trekking in Mahale Mountains National Park. Expert trackers lead you through ancient forest in search of the habituated chimpanzee community — approximately 60 individuals representing the world's largest habituated chimpanzee group. Throughout the trek, take time to watch the extraordinary birdlife in the Mahale forest canopy — over 350 species have been recorded here. Spend one hour with the chimpanzees observing them at close range. All meals and overnight at Kungwe Beach Resort.

Mahale Mountains — Second Day Chimpanzee Trekking & Lake Activities

Another full day of chimpanzee trekking in Mahale, following a different route through the forest. Throughout the trek take time to watch the birds around you in the canopy and undergrowth. After the trek, you have the option of fishing on Lake Tanganyika with local fishermen or a boat safari along the forested lakeshore. Snorkelling and kayaking are also available in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika — the world's longest freshwater lake with extraordinary visibility and over 350 endemic cichlid fish species. All meals and overnight at Kungwe Beach Resort.

Mahale → Katavi National Park

After breakfast, transfer to the Mahale airstrip for the light aircraft flight to Katavi National Park. On arrival transfer to Katavi Wildlife Camp for lunch. Afternoon game drive in Katavi — the vegetation here is remarkable, with true Miombo woodland in its purest and most extensive form found only in this remote region of Tanzania. Katavi's floodplains begin to reveal the extraordinary wildlife concentrations the park is famous for. Dinner and overnight at Katavi Wildlife Camp.

Full Day Katavi National Park

Full day game drive in Katavi National Park. The vegetation here is truly amazing — Katavi is the only place where true Miombo woodland can be seen in its most intact and undisturbed state. The Chada and Katisunga floodplains support extraordinary concentrations of hippos in the shrinking river pools during the dry season, vast buffalo herds and the lion and leopard prides that follow them. Birdlife is abundant throughout the park — raptors soar above the floodplains and the miombo woodland rings with the calls of endemic bird species. All meals and overnight at Katavi Wildlife Camp.

Another full day in Katavi. The park is very rich in cats — lion prides here are among the largest in Tanzania, grown fat on the abundance of hippos, buffalo and plains game. Hippos and crocodiles crowd the shrinking river pools in spectacular concentrations that rival any wildlife spectacle in Africa. Birdlife is abundant throughout the park in both the miombo woodland and along the river and floodplain margins. All meals and overnight at Katavi Wildlife Camp.

Katavi → Arusha / Dar es Salaam → Departure

After breakfast, transfer to the Katavi airstrip for the light aircraft flight back to Arusha or Dar es Salaam airport for your international flight home. Alternatively, spend a night in Arusha or Dar es Salaam and proceed with an extension of your choice — this package can be extended to any wildlife safari, beach holiday or any other activity conducted by Routes Kilimanjaro. Cancellation Policy ▼
90+ days before departure: full refund less a $150 administration fee. 60–89 days: 25% of total cost charged. 30–59 days: 50% of total cost charged. 0–29 days: 100% of total cost charged. All cancellations must be in writing to info.europe@routeskilimanjaro.com.
Refund Policy ▼
Refunds are processed within 14 working days of written cancellation confirmation to the original payment method. Gorilla trekking permits, park fees and pre-purchased domestic flights are non-refundable once paid to the relevant authorities.
