Treasure of Tanzania

Seven days exploring southern Tanzania's most captivating destinations — landscapes and experiences that most safari-goers never reach. Begin with boat safaris on the Rufiji River in Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous) — Africa's largest protected area at 50,000 km². Watch hippos, Nile crocodiles and waterbirds from the water, then game-drive for wild dogs, lions and elephant herds in the miombo woodland. Continue to Mikumi National Park — the Serengeti of the south — before a scenic drive through the biodiverse Udzungwa Mountains to the historic Swahili port of Bagamoyo on the Indian Ocean coast.

📅 Your Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive Dar es Salaam → Nyerere National Park +
Arrive at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam. Board a light aircraft flight to Nyerere National Park — formerly known as Selous Game Reserve and Africa's largest protected area at 50,000 km², a UNESCO World Heritage Site of extraordinary ecological significance. Afternoon boat safari on the Rufiji River — one of East Africa's great rivers, braiding through a network of lakes, channels and oxbows that support enormous concentrations of hippos, Nile crocodiles and waterbirds. The boat safari perspective is unique in Tanzania — watching elephants swim across channels, crocodiles basking on sandbanks and herons fishing in the shallows from the water level. Dinner and overnight at tented camp on the river.
🌙 Overnight: Tented Camp, Nyerere (Rufiji River)
Day 2 🐘 Full Day Nyerere National Park — Rufiji Boat & Game Drive +
Morning game drive along the Rufiji River system looking for wild dogs — one of Africa's most endangered predators, with Nyerere supporting one of the largest populations in the world. Nyerere's miombo woodland and river ecosystem also harbours vast elephant herds, enormous buffalo aggregations, lion prides, leopard, hippo and crocodile. After a bush lunch, afternoon boat safari through the interconnected lakes and channels — the Lake Manze area is particularly spectacular, with pelicans, fish eagles, goliath herons and open-billed storks feeding along the lily-covered margins. All meals and overnight at river camp.
🌙 Overnight: Tented Camp, Nyerere (Rufiji River)
Day 3 🦒 Nyerere → Mikumi National Park +
After breakfast, light aircraft or road transfer to Mikumi National Park — Tanzania's fourth-largest park, known as "the Serengeti of the south" for its vast open floodplains that support equally spectacular wildlife. The Mkata floodplain at Mikumi's heart is surrounded by the Udzungwa Mountain range and supports large elephant herds, buffalo, lions, wild dogs, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and the distinctively marked Mikumi lions. Afternoon game drive across the miombo grassland and along the Mkata River. Dinner and overnight at Mikumi Wildlife Camp.
🌙 Overnight: Mikumi Wildlife Camp
Day 4 🦓 Full Day Mikumi National Park +
Dawn game drive captures lions active on the grassland in the early morning light — Mikumi's accessible and habituated lion prides are among the easiest big cats to photograph in Tanzania. The park's large elephant herds move between the floodplain and the dense miombo woodland in family groups of 30 or more. Over 400 bird species have been recorded in Mikumi including the endemic Lilian's lovebird — one of the rarest parrots in Africa, found only in this region. Afternoon game drive concentrating on the Mkata floodplain waterhole area. All meals and overnight at Mikumi Wildlife Camp.
🌙 Overnight: Mikumi Wildlife Camp
Day 5 🦁 Mikumi → Bagamoyo via Udzungwa Mountains +
After a morning game drive, depart Mikumi and drive through the foothills of the Udzungwa Mountains — part of the Eastern Arc Mountain chain, described as the Galapagos of Africa for its extraordinary concentration of endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. Optional stops include Sanje Waterfall in Udzungwa Mountains National Park — a spectacular 170-metre cascade through ancient rainforest — or a guided walk to spot the endemic Iringa red colobus monkey and Sanje mangabey, both critically endangered primates. Continue north to Bagamoyo on the Indian Ocean coast for dinner and overnight at Bagamoyo Beach Hotel.
🌙 Overnight: Bagamoyo Beach Hotel
Day 6 🐆 Bagamoyo — Historic Swahili Town & Indian Ocean +
Full day exploring Bagamoyo — one of East Africa's most historically significant towns and a UNESCO World Heritage candidate. For centuries Bagamoyo was the most important port on the East African coast, the terminus of the Arab slave trade caravan routes from the interior and the departure point for the enslaved people shipped to Zanzibar and beyond. Walking tour of the old Arab quarter, the ruins of the slave market and holding pens, the German colonial boma and administrative buildings, and the Catholic mission where the body of David Livingstone rested on its way from the interior to England. Afternoon swim in the warm Indian Ocean and beach exploration. Dinner and overnight at Bagamoyo Beach Hotel.
🌙 Overnight: Bagamoyo Beach Hotel
Day 7 🦏 Bagamoyo → Dar es Salaam → Departure +
After a final breakfast on the Indian Ocean shore, drive to Dar es Salaam for your international departure flight. This safari can be extended with a Zanzibar beach holiday — a 30-minute flight or 2-hour ferry from Dar es Salaam — or combined with a northern Tanzania wildlife circuit.
