Bagamoyo :

Located 75km north of Dar es salaam is the former capital of the German Osta Africa which meant German East Africa. It was once a notorious embarkation port for slave trade. Remainders can still be seen in the shape of shackle rings, stone pens etc.

Bagamoyo is said to mean “Here I lay down my heart” a cry of desperation by slaves before they were packed aboard vessels for their journey into custody. Early Arab traders and other explorers like Burton, Speke, Stanley and Livingstone and other missionaries all used the port of Bagamoyo. There is a Museum operated by the Catholic Missions which is well worth a visit.
